VW Camper restoration.
The ultimate beach boys vehicle ... in standard form, you cant get much more laid back ... for your image, you cant get much cooler, and for general practicality and straightforward fun, you cant beat the classic VW camper van. Similar to the Beetle, the avenues that you can follow with a VW camper are endless, but one thing you can guarantee is fun along the way. A restoration done by us will be the envy of all and a good investment only likely to appreciate in value.
VW Camper History
You might be surprised to know that the British found themselves running the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsberg in Germany at the end of the WW2. The business model that was laid down for management and unions in Germany came from the UK. We planned a better model for German manufacturing and unions than we did for our factories back home!
A Dutch man called Ben Pon noticed that stripped down VW were being used to move parts around this large factory. In 1947 he sketched his idea of a Beetle based van. Two short years later it was launched at the Geneva Motor Show. So you could say the Brits and Dutch were the driving force behind the Volkswagen Camper.
Best ideas are simple ones, especially at a time of austerity through out Europe, the VW bus is as basic and simple as they come. It started life off as a big box on wheels, 170 cubic feet and enough room to hold a 15 hand horse. It was a very simple transport however in the next 5 yrs VW would turn out 90 different body combinations from, refrigerated ice-cream vans, delivery vans, mobile milking machines to bakers bread vans, scores of milk floats, florists, vetenary surgeons , beer wagons, butchers shops, mobile grocers. Then there were the police wagons, fire engines, ambulances, the pick ups and last was the camper van.
The first big sales came from the U.S.A. , in the mid 50s with tiny sinks and cute cookers it was the home from home. By 1963 150,000 of these camper vans had been sold in the US. The split screen was replaced in 1967 by the bay window model and what the bay lost in personality it gained in refinements with having windup windows and a top speed of 80mph. The bay window made the VW a success and by 1975 the Hanover factory had turned out 4 Million of these vehicles. Not bad for a van that started life as a box on wheels.
A different choice of engine sizes were available from the 1600cc, 1700cc, 1800cc and 2000cc. VW had been giving away gold watches to anybody who got past the 100,000 mile mark, but had to stop when the bay window model arrived after giving away 160,000 watches, because it became so reliable. But in 1979 the age of Aquarius came to an end, the comfy camper became a bungalow on wheels, a very good one but without the character of its predecessor. The VW Camper Van has earned its place in history with 5 million being sold.
